Grove Hill considers sewerage, treatment plant improvements Paul Darnell, a consulting engineer with DMD Engineers attended Monday's Grove Hill Town Council meeting to discuss improvements for the sewage system and the treatment plant. Town Council members approved the low bid of $331,000 from Cardinal Contracting, Inc. for a sewage improvement project on the south end of Court Street. A Community Development Block Grant will pay for all but $25,000 of the project costs. "The treatment plant is still doing well, but it is 30 years old. Some of the concrete needs replacing, but the worst problem right now is getting rid of the sludge," Darnell said. He also told council members there were two pumping stations that needed to be replaced, which are also 30 years old. "There is new technology available. The question is do we utilize the wet wells you have now or build new ones," he added. Darnell recommended that he and treatment plant supervisor Kyle McIntyre come back to the council once they have completed their evaluation of needed upgrades and repairs. McIntyre told council members that a pumping station on North Church Street, which currently is not working, could be repaired for $7,320. Council members approved the repairs. McIntyre also reported that the only item they were written up for on the treatment plant's annual report was the age of the plant. "It's had 1.3 billion gallons of water through it since it's been here," he added. Other business A building permit was approved for Mary McKinley to build a shed at her house on North Church Street. Council members endorsed a petition to prevent pollution. Jason Terrell of Liberty National Insurance discussed the benefits of the town offering a cafeteria plan to its employees. The council approved implementing the plan and offering it to town employees. A bid of $2,378.64 to patch the asphalt on Cobb Street was approved. Mary Pendleton was hired by the town to manage the senior nutrition center. David Adams was approved as the architect to build the new senior nutrition center. Jackie Garrick was appointed court clerk until a new court magistrate can be trained. Cheryl Hicks was appointed as magistrate trainee.
The hiring of two new employees through the water board was approved.
