Over 100 marijuana plants confiscated
The plants were discovered Friday when the Alabama Bureau of Investigation's eradication team flew over the county. A majority of the plants were spotted by the helicopter pilot just off Dial Road in the Walker Springs community. Ground personnel from Clarke County Sheriff's Department's narcotics unit, Task Force One and an investigator with the district attorney's office went to the area and found 80 plants growing in styrofoam cups and waiting to be transplanted and 11 plants that were about a foot tall. The area was guarded by pit bulldogs. "When we were getting ready to leave, the owner, Eddie Earl Williams pulled up. He was interviewed and he admitted the plants were his," said CCSD Narcotics Investigator Jim Mundie. He gave them consent to search his residence where drug paraphernalia, marijuana, powder cocaine and two weapons were found. Williams was arrested and charged with manufacturing marijuana, use/possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance. A large quantity of prescription drugs was also seized. Other marijuana plants were found in the Walker Springs area and the north end of the county. "Those plants weren't related to this case and we are investigating them. The street value of all the plants we found is about $200,000," Mundie said.
County officials said Williams' status as a county employee is being reviewed in light of the arrest.
