New steel mill location to be known Friday

Alabamians should know when they wake up Friday morning whether or not a $2.9 billion German steel mill will be built on the Tombigbee River in Calvert or on the Mississippi River in south Louisiana.

The company, ThyssenKrupp Group, has announced that its supervisory board will meet on Friday to decide on a site. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in Dusseldorf, Germany. That's 3 a.m. for Alabama.

Alabama and Louisiana courted the steelmaker heavily with both states offering millions in incentives. Alabama and local officials predict the mill will be a boom to all of southwest Alabama if it locates in Calvert, 50 miles south of Grove Hill on Highway 43.

The ThyssenKrupp Steel AG plant will employ 29,000 construction workers during the three years it will take to build and then 2,700 permanent employees. Spinoff jobs have been estimated at as high as 50,000.

The plant will manufacture carbon steel and stainless steel for a variety of uses, including automotive, electrical and utility industries, construction, appliances, machinery and more.
