Clarke school board considers student drug testing at JHS Clarke County Board of Education members have been asked to consider a pilot program for student drug testing at Jackson High School. "The students that participate in extracurricular activities, drive a vehicle and participate in sports would be tested," Superintendent Gerald Stephens told board members during the May 10 meeting. The proposed policy on the drug testing procedures was distributed to board members and a decision will be made at the next meeting. School uniforms Results from the uniform dress policy survey sent home for parents to complete were reported by Gwen Powell. Only 49 percent of the surveys were returned and it was believed that many of the surveys at the high school level were actually completed by students. Of the 49 percent returned, 66 percent of the surveys indicated uniforms were wanted, 63 percent felt uniforms create a safe environment in the schools, 79 percent felt the policy was effectively implemented, 51 percent felt it made a difference in discipline and 50 percent felt it was a financial hardship in parents. Personnel Transfers were approved for Gwen White, special education, from Jackson Middle School to Jackson High School; Jennifer Lankford, from Coffeeville High School to Jackson High School; Susan Brown, from office aide at Grove Hill Elementary School to secretary/ bookkeeper at Grove Hill Elementary; Anthony Ezell, special education, from Jackson Middle School to Jackson High School; Cara Slayton, special education aide, from Jackson Middle School to Jackson High School; Emma Fenderson, special education aide, from Jackson Middle School to Jackson High School; Sheri Baugh, from Child Nutrition Program manager at Wilson Hall Middle School to CNP assistant; Moneek Bryant, special education English, from Wilson Hall Middle School to Clarke County High School; Euladia Calhoun, from science teacher at Coffeeville High School to instructional assistant at Coffeeville High School; Jean Moore, from Child Nutrition Program cashier at Wilson Hall to CNP assistant at Jackson Intermediate School. New employees include Beverly Bush, special education at Wilson Hall Middle School and Christine White, special education at Jackson Intermediate School Bob Bumpers was approved for continuation of part-time duties as student services specialist at Jackson High School. Retirement and re-employment was approved for Sharon Harrell as part-time technology coordinator at a salary of $20,000. Increase in compensation was approved for Ricky Prine, from technology technician to technology specialist, from $38,956 to $43,956; Henry Williams, additional $5,000; Larry Weaver, additional $5,000; and Mark Davis, additional $5,000. Resignations were approved for Woodie Pugh as assistant principal at Clarke County High School, but will remain in teaching duties and Jo Ann Baggett, Child Nutrition Program at Jackson Intermediate School. Family medical leave was approved for Katherine Brunson, a teacher at Jackson High School. Other business Stephens reported construction had slowed down at the new Clarke County High School because of the lack of experienced block layers and brick layers. The dugouts and road into the new ball complex in Grove Hill are under construction and the road leading to the back of Grove Hill Elementary School has been shaped. The application deadline for the principal's position at Jackson High School has passed and a recommendation for the job will be brought before the board in June.
The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 24 at 4 p.m.
