Opportunity knocking Now that all the back-patting and congratulating on securing the gigantic ThyssenKrupp steel mill for southwest Alabama has been done (and it is well deserved we hasten to add), what do the individual counties and municipalities do to make sure they feel the impact of this nearly $4 billion facility? Do we sit back and wait for our share to drop out of the sky? Or do we take the initiative in making sure that we aren't left out? Over a three-year period some 29,000 construction workers will be needed for the massive facility? Some local citizens will get work, for sure, but many will come here from other areas to work. Can we provide housing for them? Once the plant cranks up, it will employ some 2,700 permanent workers. That is significant but even greater is the 30,000 to 50,000 spinoff jobs that are estimated will be created over the next 20 years. That will include related smaller industries, service businesses, retailers and, likely, healthcare facilities. We must work now to start preparing for this development. Clarke County is just a stone's throw away from Calvert and will surely benefit from the boom that is coming. Jackson should be in the best position because of its geographical location but Grove Hill and Thomasville can benefit too. But we can only benefit if we start working...now! We can't take for granted that good things will come our way simply because we are close to the plant site. We must work to earn it.
Opportunity is knocking. Will we hasten to open the door? We must!
