Baseball can be a wonderful gift for all

Sports, love them or hate them, have a way of bringing out the best and worst in all of us.

The good times are when they bring out what is best in all of us and that is the sense of pride in our community.

Baseball has been called the great leveler. It is the kind of game that requires no social status nor does it require great athletic ability in order to compete.

It is the most democratic of all sports in that every person has a sense of importance. In other sports you can go to your best player time and again in the crunch, but in baseball every person has their turn at bat and every person is called on to cover their territory in the field.

Because of the unity of the game its really easy to see how a community can behind their team. Mix in the rivalries and the game reaches a new level.

There is no secret in the lovehate relationships between the schools in Washington County. There is no way to adequately describe it. You have to be there to fully understand it all.

But this past weekend all of those feelings of, for a better word, hate were put away.

On Saturday, in the town of Millry, as the Wildcas were fighting and clawing their way to a berth in the Class 1A finals there were people from Chatom there, rooting the team onto victory. Leroy faithful, next to Washington County fans and Millry fans, all shoulder to shoulder with one common goal.

The rest of the state may look down on rural Washington County, but on that day they could pull together and do something that had not been done before. And that is sending three teams from the same small county to play for championships. They represent one-half of the titles that can be won.

I was happy to see Millry advance and join Chatom and Leroy as they headed to Montgomery this week.

It is easy to pull for these schools. They have great coaches in Danny Powell, Ricky Davidson and Shane Hendry. They have great players and they have great fans.

No other sport truly has the ability to do that. Not even my beloved football.

My favorite thing will be those wonderful signs that get erected when teams win. People passing through know they are in a strong sports town then.
