Sales tax holiday seminars are June 6

A series of meetings scheduled throughout the state to help businesses better understand the annual sales tax holiday continues Wednesday, June 6, with two seminars scheduled for southwest Alabama.

The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce is the host for the meeting scheduled for 9 a.m., Wednesday, June 6 at Jackson City Hall, 400 Commerce St, Jackson. The Choctaw County Chamber of Commerce will host a meeting at 1 p.m. that same day at the Butler Civic Center, 114 N. Academy Drive in Butler. The Alabama Department of Revenue and the Alabama Retail Association in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama organized the meetings scheduled from May through July.

Any business in the surrounding areas that sell clothing, school supplies, books, or computers and computer equipment would benefit from the information shared at this one-hour seminar. The seminar is great training for new clerks or managers, a good overview for new businesses and a refresher for retailers who participated in the tax holiday last year. Any interested party is welcome. These are the only meetings scheduled for Clarke, Choctaw, Marengo, Sumter, Wilcox and Washington counties.

Seating is limited, so please let the Jackson Area Chamber at (251) 246-3251 or the Choctaw County Chamber at (205) 459- 3459 know if you plan to attend.

The state's second observance of the sales tax holiday in Alabama begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3 and ends at midnight Sunday, Aug. 5. Wilcox and Marengo counties have waived their county sales tax for the three-day period, in addition to the state's four percent sales tax, which is waived statewide. As of this news release, Clarke, Choctaw, Sumter and Washington counties as well as several municipalities in the area had not notified the Revenue Department that they would be dropping their sales tax.
