Work starts on restoring 1830s cabin
By Jim Cox

Lou Como of Brewton and Jerry Adams of Century, Fla. at work on Mathews log cabin on museum grounds in Grove Hill.
The tools may not be all authentic- workers are using chain saws and other modern equipment- but the old timey method of log cabin construction is being adhered to faithfully as work begins to restore an early 1800s cabin on the grounds of the Clarke County Museum.

Lou Como of Brewton has experience in log cabin restorations as well as home building and improvements. He formerly lived and worked in the Youngstown, Ohio area.

Como said log cabins are a challenge but fun projects to do. The biggest obstacle, he said, is finding the right materials such as old logs, rough cut boards and other authentic or authenticlooking supplies.

The cabin was built as a double-pen cabin by Josiah and Lucy Mathews, likely in the late 1830s. It originally stood southwest of Grove Hill near the Mathews Cemetery. Probably in the 1870s it was moved about a half a mile. A higher pitch roof was added to give a larger loft for sleeping quarters. Windows were altered. Over time, rooms were enclosed along the two porches that stretched the length of the house.

Plans are to return the roofline to its original pitch. The windows will also be restored to their original look. The intent is to return the cabin to the way it would have looked when it was built in the late 1830s.

Como said he needs materials to help restore the house. Period logs, 10-inch slab logs, rough-cut 2x6s and 2x8s up to 16 feet long are among the materials sought as well as any other old lumber that might be usable.

Anyone with materials may contact the Clarke County Museum, 275-2014 or 275-8684.

Monetary donations are also needed for the cabin's restoration. Checks may be made payable to the Clarke County Historical Society and designated for the project.

Donations to the historical society are tax deductible.
