Grove Hill artist Irma Brady Carlson has been honored by the Alabama State Council on the Arts for 50 years of "outstanding contributions to the field of visual arts."

The Community Study Club of Grove Hill, of which she is a member, nominated her for the award.

Sherry Hamilton served as chairman of the nominating committee and said Mrs. Carlson was very worthy of the award. "The Study Club was proud to nominate her and did so with gusto," she said.

Her work was exhibited in the Governor's Mansion during George Wallace's term in office and she donated a painting entitled "Pink Ballerina" to one of Wallace's daughters.

Sherry Hamilton explained, "Irma takes seriously her role as a mentor. She finds joy in making opportunities for aspiring artists by standing beside them and coaching, showing and guiding. She gives her time and talent so that these students can have some of the excitement she has found in creating with magical colors."
