Ross earns Achievement Medal in Iraq
Corporal Ross was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269. He is stationed on Al Asad Base in Al Anbar Province of Iraq. Ross is an Aviation Maintenance Administration Specialist and is responsible for maintaining logbooks and records on UH-1N, Huey and AH-1W Super Cobra helicopters. On January 30 he discovered an error in the aircraft's logbook and data system entries that had allowed an AH-1W Super Cobra's main rotor system to be flown over 150 hours beyond its required removal interval. The award declaration stated "Corporal Ross' attention to detail and presence of mind enabled him to recognize the clerical error, correct it and after realizing that the aircraft in question was flying, act to facilitate the safe return of the crew. Corporal Ross' initiative, perseverance and total dedication to duty reflected credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United State naval service."
Ross, a native of Grove Hill, is the son of Kylia and James Smith of Grove Hill and the late Allen Ross.
