School board recognizes Junior Miss winners Winners of the recent Clarke County Junior Miss program were recognized by the Clarke County Board of Education during the May 24 meeting. Ellie Wilson, Clarke County's Junior Miss; Keke Cummings, first runner-up; Whitney Drinkard, second runner-up; and Schaefer Bradford, third runner-up, are all students at Clarke County High School. Chelsea Beverly, fourth runner-up is a student at Jackson High School. A book was donated in each girl's honor to their school library. "I hope we fill the libraries up," said Superintendent Gerald Stephens. He also recognized Carmen Rotch, the custodian of funds, for her work with the program each year. School uniforms Uniform changes were approved for Grove Hill Elementary School, Gillmore Elementary School and Jackson Intermediate School. Students at those schools will be allowed to wear any color tennis shoe as long as the toe and heel are closed. Money matters A bid was approved to build petitions to eliminate the pods at Grove Hill Elementary School. RSS Contracting of Jackson was awarded the bid at $49,200. The highest bids were accepted on several used vehicles. Payment of bills, accounts and payroll in the amount of $2,519,738.02 was approved. Personnel Transfers were approved for Chris Young, from teacher to part-time assistant principal and part-time teacher at Clarke County High School and Coquesa Dotson from teacher at Wilson Hall Middle School to teacher at Grove Hill Elementary School. Re-employment was approved for Holly Garcia as a teacher at Gillmore Elementary School and Bridgett Powell as special education teacher at Coffeeville High School. New employees include Brenda Poellinitz, science teacher at Coffeeville High School; Wendy Joiner, teacher at Gillmore Elementary School; Landon Hilt, teacher/coach at Jackson High School; and Rhonda Shears Wright, elementary teacher at Coffeeville High School. Increase in compensation was approved for Gwen Powell, to $66,449; Arthur Scott, to $21,674; and Julia Ann Deas, to $71,674. A resignation was accepted from Elizabeth Williams, who was the counselor at Gillmore Elementary School. Other business Stephens reported that a new appointee would be named to the Board of Equalization at the next meeting. The pilot policy for drug testing students at Jackson High School was given to board members and will be voted on at the next meeting. Prices for breakfast for teachers and visitors at the schools were approved.
The next meeting is scheduled for June 20 at 4 p.m.
