Jackson's Long named top mayor at ACE meet

Richard Long
The 2007 Star Awards were presented by the Alabama Communities of Excellence (ACE) at the annual Community Kickoff conducted May 4 in Clanton.

The ACE Star Awards recognize those individuals - -- both community participants and ACE partners --- that have performed above and beyond the call of duty and are considered to be the "shining stars" of the ACE program, a comprehensive program designed to assist Alabama's smaller communities in their efforts to plan, grow and prosper.

Star Award recipients are as follows:

+2007 ACE Outstanding Mayor - Mayor Richard Long, city of Jackson

+2007 ACE Outstanding Local Coordinators - Terri Daulton, city of Heflin and Larry Pinkerton, city of Fayette

+2007 ACE Outstanding Team Captain - Lamar Smith, Alagasco

+2007 ACE Outstanding Volunteers - William (Bo) Lineberry, Balch & Bingham; Sondra Dunaway, Alabama Power Company

ACE's three-phase approach targets communities with populations ranging from 2,000 to 12,000. Eligible communities must submit applications for the program. Communities are selected based on the level of local commitment to the ACE program and the community's capacity to support the ACE program.

Phase I is the Assessment phase and includes the application process, selection process and a detailed community assessment by ACE team members. A comprehensive "report card" detailing community assets, weaknesses and recommended strategy and actions is prepared.

Phase II is the Leadership Development and Strategic Planning component and includes the creation of an ongoing leadership development program and the development of a strategic plan.

Phase III is the Implementation and Comprehensive Planning segment which addresses comprehensive planning, commercial business development, education enhancement, infrastructure, health and human services, retiree attraction, tourism, economic development and quality of life/recreation issues.

Upon completion of all three phases, communities are designated an "Alabama Community of Excellence" and receive a grant for further community/ economic development efforts.

Three communities are currently participating in the ACE program: Headland, Jackson and Jacksonville.

In addition, the 2007 Class of Participants was also announced at the Community Kickoff and consists of Evergreen, Graysville and York.
