'Corps Watch' protects parks

The Black Warrior and Tombigbee River - Alabama Coosa Project, has launched "Corps Watch," a nationwide crime deterrence program to protect public property managed by the Corps of Engineers (Corps).

Each year, millions of dollars of public funds are lost, due to vandalism, theft, arson and enviromental/ cultural resource damage. These funds could have otherwise been used to maintain and enhance your recreation facilities and natural resources, while preserving them for future generations' enjoyment.

"Corps Watch" is similar to "Neighborhood Watch" initiatives, and is designed to heighten public awareness, and reporting, of criminal activity within or around dams, lakes, locks, recreation areas and other Corps of Engineers facilities.

In effect, everyone is invited to actively participate in protection of their public property, by looking and listening for suspicious or criminal activity, and reporting any observed violations through a toll-free hotline. Individuals may be eligible for rewards up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of offenders.

However, callers who may elect to remain anonymous would not be eligible for rewards.

Anyone who observes, or has knowledge of, theft, vandalism, enviromental/cultural damage, or any other threat or suspicious activity against Corps managed public property, need only dial 1-866-413-7970 to report that information.

Posters promoting "Corps Watch" have been placed at Corps recreation areas.

Make a difference with "Corps Watch!"
