Hospital Auxiliary hears about Southern Oaks

The Grove Hill Memorial Hospital Auxiliary held its May meeting in the conference room. President Jeanee Parden called the meeting to order and introduced Mrs. Sharon McCoy, the unit director of Southern Oaks.

Mrs. McCoy explained that Southern Oaks is an acute psychiatric unit dedicated to the depression and mental disorders in geriatric patients. The secure unit is under the direction of a staff psychiatrist and a medical doctor is available 24/7.

Patients stay at Southern Oaks from seven to 21 days - depending upon their progress. A wellplanned program in an attractive, clean and well-lighted surroundings and administered by a staff with intensive training is successful in returning patients to optimal emotional wellness.

Doug Sewell, Grove Hill Memorial Hospital Administrator, reported that Southern Oaks has had a record year. He added that area doctors are referring patients to the sleep lab.

Mrs. Hazel Etheridge, Mrs. French Downey and Mrs. Parden reported that the meeting of the Auxiliary members in District IV held in the Grove Hill United Methodist Church was interesting and helpful. After presentations by Mrs. Mary English and Mrs. Amy Duke, visiting volunteers shared ideas for involving members and planning projects to raise funds.

Mrs. Parden was recognized by the AQAF Hospital Services for service and commitment to transform health care and improve patient care outcomes in Alabama.

The recent jewelry sale netted $2,245. An Imagination Book Sale will be held during the summer.

Members were asked to contact their local state senator to support Senate Bill 35: Shaken Baby Syndrome. It will require all Alabama hospitals and birthing centers to provide child abuse prevention information to new mothers before they are discharged from the facility.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:10 a.m.
