Gibbs going to Europe with 'People to People'

Cassie Gibbs of Sweet Water will travel to Europe this summer with the student ambassador group, People to People.

People to People was founded by Dwight Eisenhower to promote peace through understanding the different countries the students visit.

"We also do community projects. Our group made Easter baskets for the veteran's home and we are supposed to participate in a Habitat for Humanity project," Cassie said.

She is a ninth grader at Patrician Academy and was invited to join the program along with another girl from her school, Ciara Smith.

"There are middle school and high school delegates. Most everyone is from the Mobile area. We meet on Saturdays at Baldwin County High School to work on projects, learn more about the countries we'll visit and have fund-raisers to pay for our trip," she said.

The students are expected to raise money to pay for the trip, which costs about $5,000. Cassie's group sold candles, cokes and held a quilt raffle.

"I've earned the money to pay for my trip, now I'm earning my spending money," she said.

The countries they will visit include Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, England and France.

Cassie is the daughter of Don and Carol Gibbs of Sweet Water and the granddaughter of Tommy and Carolyn Wood of Grove Hill and Herman and Audrey Gibbs of Sweet Water.
