New 'Call before you dig' number available statewide Alabama One Call launches 811 "Call Before You Dig" number to help save lives and protect Alabama's underground infrastructure Alabama One Call announces 811 as an additional "Call Before You Dig" number to reach the Alabama One Call Center to have underground utility lines located prior to excavation activities within Alabama. The Alabama One Call's toll free number 800-292-8525 will continue to be operational as well. This new N-11 abbreviated dialing number was designated by the FCC to be used nationwide to reach One Call Center in each state. Now, as excavators move from state to state it is much easier for them to notify the utility companies to get underground lines located. Instead of having to know each 800 number for the individual states they can reach the one call for the state they are in by using 811. It is also much more convenient for homeowners and non-routine excavators to remember the three digit number to "call before you dig" instead of a ten digit toll free number. Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional, smart digging means calling 811 before each job. Homeowners often make risky assumptions about whether or not they should get their utility lines marked, but every digging job requires a call - even small projects like planting trees and shrubs. The depth of utility lines varies and there may be multiple utility lines in a common area. Digging without calling can disrupt service to an entire neighborhood, harm you and those around you and potentially result in fines and repair costs. Calling 811 before every digging job gets your underground utility lines marked for free and helps prevent undesired consequences and complies with Alabama Act 94-487 which requires "calling before you dig." Alabama One Call is a non-profit organization established to provide a centralized one call system as a means to safeguard against injury and loss of life, protect public services and to prevent damages to underground facilities by providing prior notification of excavation and demolition activities.
