Weyerhaeuser scholars are told

Seven local high school graduates earned more than $24,000 in scholarships from Weyerhaeuser Company through local and national scholarship programs.

Receiving Weyerhaeuser scholarships for 2007 are Andrew Parten, Jake Overstreet and Hannah Etheridge, all of Thomasville, Cory Skipper of Grove Hill, MacKenzie Martin of Thomasville and Griffin, Ga., Shelisa Saulsberry of Coy and Brittany Carson of Camden.

Andrew Parten and MacKenzie Martin received the national Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation scholarship for children of employees. They were among 65 national scholarship winners in 2007. Recipients of the national awards are selected from among more than 500 applicants across North America and receive renewable scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 a year.

Jake Overstreet and Cory Skipper received the $4,000 Weyerhaeuser Pine Hill scholarship for children of Pine Hill facility employees. The unionmanagement project is funded by vending machine proceeds and pays $1,000 a year for four years for college expenses.

Shelisa Saulsberry, Brittany Carson, Andrew Parten and Hannah Etheridge received onetime awards of $1,000 each through the Pine Hill Weyerhaeuser Foundation Committee. The scholarships are given to top students at Wilcox Central High School and Thomasville High School. The schools select the winners.

The national Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation Scholarship recipients are:

Andrew Parten, son of Barry and Lynette Parten. Barry is a C operator in the powerhouse at Weyerhaeuser's Pine Hill containerboard operation. Andrew was salutatorian at Thomasville High School, a National Honor Society and Beta Club member who won Thomasville High School's Bryant Jordan Achievement Award and the Wendy's Heisman Award. He plans to attend the University of West Alabama and major in premed and chemistry.

MacKenzie Martin, son of Fernando and Denise Martin. Fernando is safety manager for Weyerhaeuser's iLevel Lumber Technologies operation. MacKenzie was president of the National Honor Society at his high school at Griffin, Ga. and captain of the Academic Bowl Team. He plans to attend Morehouse College in Atlanta and major in biology and neuroscience. He plans a career in medicine.

Weyerhaeuser Pine Hill scholarship winners are:

Jake Overstreet, son of Mike and Teri Overstreet. Mike Overstreet is a mechanic in the paper machine area at Weyerhaeuser's Pine Hill containerboard operation. Jake was a National Honor Society member at Thomasville High School and an all-state football and baseball player. He plans to attend the University of South Alabama and major in engineering or sports education.

Cory Skipper, son of Scott and Gina Skipper. Scott Skipper is a member of the paper machine work system team at Weyerhaeuser's Pine Hill containerboard operation. Cory is a member of the Clarke County High School top ten and a participant in the Clarke County Gifted Educational Program. He is an Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 81, where he has been troop leader for six years, and a member of the Order of the Arrow, an honor society for Boy Scouts. Cory plans to attend Auburn University and major in building science and business marketing.

Pine Hill Weyerhaeuser Foundation Committee scholarship winners for Wilcox Central High School are:

Shelisa Saulsberry, daughter of Archie and Shelia Dortch and Roy Saulsberry Jr. She was valedictorian of her class at Wilcox Central High School, Miss WCHS and vice president of the student government association. She plans to attend Alabama State University with a double major in secondary education and mathematics.

Brittany Carson, daughter of Stanley and Brenda Carson. She was salutatorian of her class, president of the 21st Century Youth Leadership Movement and a cheerleader. She plans to attend the Alabama A&M University to study nursing and anesthesia.

Winners for Thomasville High School are:

Andrew Parten, salutatorian at THS, and Hannah Etheridge, daughter of Chip and Billie Jo Etheridge. Hannah was valedictorian of her class, 2007 Clarke County Junior Miss, and president of the Beta Club, the THS student body and Thomasville Juniorettes. She plans to attend the University of South Alabama to study physical therapy.

The Weyerhaeuser scholarship winners were honored with a scholars luncheon on May 24 at Weyerhaeuser's Pine Hill training center hosted by Brad Larrimore, vice president and mill manager at Weyerhaeuser's containerboard operation, and Foundation advisory committee members.

The national and Pine Hill Foundation scholarships are funded through the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation, which has a mission is to improve the quality of life in communities where Weyerhaeuser has a presence. Since 1948, the Foundation has directed more than $183 million to the communities where Weyerhaeuser employees work, live and play. Nationwide, the Foundation's annual philanthropic budget totals $10 million.

Weyerhaeuser Company's Pine Hill, containerboard operation produces linerboard and corrugating medium - the strong, brown paper used to manufacture shipping boxes -

and is one of the state's largest paper recyclers (recycling more than 700 tons per day of old boxes and other paper). Other Weyerhaeuser businesses at Pine Hill produce lumber and veneer, manage timberlands and grow superior tree seedlings.

The Pine Hill complex employs more than 700 people in familywage jobs and is the largest employer in rural Wilcox County.

Elsewhere in Alabama, Weyerhaeuser manages 580,000 acres of forest land, all certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative™ (SFI) standard, and operates a corrugated sheets operation at Huntsville and iLevel® Lumber Technologies mill at Millport, an iLevel Service Center at Tuscumbia, and an iLevel Veneer Technologies mill near Evergreen, which produces engineered wood building materials.
