Packers Bend fire claims elderly woman Saturday

An 81-year-old Mobile woman died in a house fire in Packers Bend Saturday.

Dell Virginia Packer was visiting her family's old home on Tait Circle and was there alone when the fire started Saturday afternoon.

A neighbor saw smoke coming from the house and called for help.

Packers Bend is in Monroe County and the Monroe County coroner, the sheriff's office and the Alabama Fire Marshal are investigating the fire.

The body was taken to the Alabama Department of Forsensic Sciences in Mobile for an autopsy.
