Shakes, smoothies are great snacks

Summer
was usually a boring time for me when I lived in the Central community in Baton Rouge, La. I was a preteen, I didn't drive, my mom worked, I only had a couple of neighbors and they were boys younger than me by a couple of years.
I discovered the telephone quickly. I was able to keep in touch with my friends from school by phone, since they didn't drive either. The boys next door loved to play board games. We passed the day playing checkers or Monopoly. It really was fun. I became quite the champion of checkers. The boys hated it when I had to leave the game to talk on the phone. Our babysitter would prepare lunch and always had an afternoon snack planned for us.
Back then the rage was making your own homemade shakes in the blender. I was partial to the chocolate shake but I also liked the smoothies.
If your preteen kids are bored, let them make these shakes and smoothies in the blender. Then give them the telephone and see how their days perk up.
Today instead of board games the kids play their DS games and Playstation games. Pull out the old checkerboards or card games and see how much fun you can have with them.
Do you remember how to play canasta?
