What Others Say
No timetable on 84

Joe McInnes, director of the Alabama Department of Transportation (DOT) in Montgomery, couldn't say when the project to four-lane U.S. Highway 84 from Monroeville to Evergreen might be completed.

McInnes who spoke to about 100 members of the Monroeville Kiwanis Club, said he estimates it will take 20 years to four-lane 84 all the way to the Mississippi state line unless the U.S. Congress appropriates more funds.

But, when he was asked for an estimate on when the Monroeville -to-Evergreen project would be completed, he said he couldn't. He did say that the corridor study would be finished by the end of the year and the state would know the best route to take from Monroeville to Evergreen.

Gov. Bob Riley stood on the steps of the Monroe County Courthouse last year and promised that 84 would be four-laned from Monroeville to Evergreen within the next 10 years.

But, that was before ThyssenKrupp, one of the largest steel makers in the world, announced it would be locating in North Mobile County.

Our guess is that even though Highway 84 is high on the list, we will see very little progress made on the Monroeville-to Evergreen project with the state focusing more on all the arteries around the steel mill site.

But, we can always hope for the best.
