Fireballs make first perfect softball season

"I stress and preach defense, defense and more defense," Fireball head softball coach Milton Sheffield said, discussing how he felt his 9 & 10-year-old team was able to go 16-0 this season. "It isn't always about having the best players, it takes hard work and hustle."

They are the first softball team to complete an undefeated season in Grove Hill.

The Fireballs didn't just go unbeaten this year, they pretty much ran through the competition as they scored 217 runs ( 13.6 per game) while holding opponents to 44 runs (2.75 runs per game).

"It starts with defense because if a team can't score then they can't beat you, I bet we didn't make 13 errors all season." Sheffield said. "Then you have to have solid pitching. We had five pitchers and they did a great job throwing strikes and they did not walk many batters."

Another thing Sheffield attributed to the team's success was the deep bench.

"When we made our substitutions there was no drop-off in play," he said. "All, and I mean all of the girls gave 100 percent when they touched that field.

"But make no mistake about it," Sheffield added. "These girls are the ones who did this. I just stood there and watched and drank Gatorade."

He added that, "There was not one single girl on the team that would not do anything you asked them to do. They did everything and more."

Sheffield was very thankful to the players and their parents for allowing the team to have the success they had.

"Everyone from the kids to the parents, I just want to thank them for a wonderful year."

Sheffield and his staff of Alan Jordan, Randy Smith, Penny Law and Mirenda Hare will also be the coaches for the all-star team chosen last Tuesday night.
