AEC is now PowerSouth Energy

Alabama Electric Cooperative, Inc.'s (AEC) board of trustees voted to adopt a new corporate identity, including a new name for the organization, at the May 25 annual meeting.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2008, the organization's name will be PowerSouth Energy Cooperative.

"While respectful of AEC's history and those who have honorably served this organization, the board recognized a need to evaluate our corporate identity and consider alternatives to better serve our membership," says Jimmy Ramage, AEC board chairman.

"The board chose PowerSouth Energy Cooperative because it implies strength, integrity and the cooperative nature of our business," said Clay Campbell, previous AEC board chairman. "We believe it will help position the organization in the best possible light to foster economic growth, strengthen our membership and encompass the future direction of our members."

The new name better represents the geographic diversity of the membership, and it will enhance the organization's position as a leader in economic development and the energy industry as a whole.

The four Florida cooperatives served by AEC represented 24 percent of AEC's annual peak demand in 2006. These members are often confronted with confusion when recruiting potential economic development prospects.

"There will be no structure or staff changes associated with the name change," says Gary Smith, AEC president and CEO. "As we move into the future, PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, along with our members, will continue

to provide the level of service to which our consumers are accustomed, and we will work together to overcome the challenges we may face."

Final preparations for the name change are under way, including logo and stationery design.

AEC, a Touchstone Energy® Cooperative headquartered in Andalusia, Ala., generates and transmits wholesale electricity to 16 distribution cooperatives and four municipalities in south and central Alabama and northwest Florida. AEC's 20 distribution members provide reliable, affordable, environmentally sound energy to more than 380,000 consumers in 39 counties in Alabama and 10 counties in northwest Florida.
