Cody Hill
Dr. John A. Johnson, President, Alabama Southern Community College recently announced the 2007 scholarship recipients for the Alabama Southern Industry Alliance for a Technologically Advanced Workforce.

Louisiana-Pacific Corporation scholarship recipients include:

+ Cody Ethan Hill, 2007 graduate of Thomasville High School and the son of Morris and Barbara Hill; and

+ Paul Anthony Lynn, 2007 graduate of Sweet Water High School and the son of Paul and Anita Lynn.

"LP is proud to support the community by providing full tuition Alabama Southern Industry Alliance Advanced Technology Scholarships to these six young people," said Mary Cohn, corporate affairs communications manager. "Our goal is to help these students gain the tools and knowledge they need to become skilled workers and leaders in the community."

The Industry Alliance was first announced in December of 2004. These scholarships are for one of four advanced technology programs depending upon industry needs: (1) Paper and Chemical Technology, (2) Instrumentation and Electronics, (3) Industrial Maintenance and Electrical Technology, and (4) Machine Technology Millwright.

The 2007 Alliance companies include Boise, Alabama River Pulp, Temple Inland, Weyerhaeuser, Olin Chemical, Rock Tenn, Gulf States and Louisiana Pacific.

Alabama Southern Community College's Industry Alliance for a Technologically Advanced Workforce was selected as one of the top ten national Bellwether Finalists for the prestigious 2006 Bellwether Award for Workforce Development by the Community College Futures Assembly.

"This industry alliance reflects the visionary leadership of our local industry leaders," said Dr. John A. Johnson, Alabama Southern President. They know that a technologically advanced workforce is the key to their success. They value their new manufacturing technologists so much that they provide better scholarships than we give our top athletes."

This Scholarships-Internships- Jobs partnership was pioneered in 1995 between Alabama Southern and CIBA Specialty Chemicals. Since then, the American Chemical Society has described the partnership as a "workforce development model for the nation." The National Science Foundation has described it as a "national model for technical training" and awarded Alabama Southern a $5 million grant as the National Center for Pulp and Paper Technology Training to promote similar partnerships nationwide.
