Elaborate playground planned for new Pine City Park in Jackson
The Jackson City Council has committed approximately nine acres of city property for the proposed Pine City Park. The resolution to commit the property was approved contingent upon the park committee raising the necessary funds to construct the park. The property designated is located adjacent to the New Era softball field in north Jackson. Nancy McDonald, Asbury Daffin and Johnny Heritage, representing the Pine City Park Committee, pitched their idea for building a three to five acre city park to the Jackson City Council several months ago. M c D o n a l d, who is spearheading the project, said the hope is to have a large enough tract of land to have a basketball court, large pavilion, walking/jogging track, smaller picnic areas and a playground for all ages to enjoy. She explained that it could be built in phases, beginning with one component and expanding from that point. McDonald said a company is being considered for the project and would be in Jackson May 8 to meet with both children and adults for input on the park. She said the company uses wood composite structures and wants children to help design it by telling the company what they want. The estimated cost for building the park is between $350,000 and $400,000. "We want help from the entire community in raising the funds for this project," said McDonald. "We have been looking at different grant opportunities and have already found some." A "block party" fundraiser originally set for June 8 was postponed due to the weather and will be held this Friday, June 22 instead. It will be downtown, in front of the Junior Fire Station from 5:30 until 8 p.m. The event will offer a night out for the entire family and features food, games and entertainment for children and adults. Armbands will be sold to children for $5. Those who wear their park T-shirt or purchase one that night will receive a free drink ticket.
All proceeds go to benefit the Pine City Park project.
