Jacobs tops all-state baseball players The success that area baseball programs saw on the diamonds helped pave the way to the same type of recognition on the Alabama Sports Writers Association all-state team released last week. There were two coach of the year winners, one Super 10 member as well as a pitcher and player of the year in some of the classifications. Danny Powell, who led the Leroy Bears to the Class 2A state crown was named Coach of the Year. Even though the Washington County Bulldogs were unable to bring home the Class 3A title, their head coach Ricky Davidson was honored as that class' Coach of the Year for taking his team to the finals. Millry head coach Shane Hendry just missed making it a trifecta of winners from Washington County as he was edged out by Hackleburg coach Rod Hudson in 1A. Jackson High School pitcher John Luke Jacobs was named to the ASWA Super 10 team. That team is not position specific and includes who the voters feel are the 10 best players in the state. Jacobs was also named Class 4A Pitcher of the Year as he went 9-3 on the mound with 142 strikeouts while allowing just 19 earned runs in 83 innings of work. His strikeout totals were the second most in the AHSAA. Jacobs will take his game to Auburn's baseball team. His teammate Kent Myer was also named to the first team as a third baseman. Staying in Class 4A Thomasville's Jake Overstreet was named the first team shortstop. Overstreet, who has signed to play at the University of South Alabama, was named the first team third baseman last year. Thomasville pitcher Paul Noble and Jackson outfielder Todd Waller were named honorable mention. Moving to Class 3A Clarke County High School's Hunter Cross was named to the first team at third base. WCHS' Kyle Dees was named to the first team as a pitcher. His teammate, Drake Warr, was named to the first team as a designated hitter. Kyle Pennington was named an honorable mention as a utility player. The Leroy Bears, who earned the Class 2A championship, dominated the all-state team in the class. Taylor White, the MVP of the state championship series, was named the Player of the Year. He hit .459 with six homers, 20 doubles with 48 RBI. He also scored 65 runs. As a pitcher he went 8-0 with four saves. He struck out 60 in 72 frames on the mound. Chris Weaver at first base, Brandon Jones and Brittian Schultz as utility players were also named first team all-state. Clint Moseley was named honorable mention designated hitter. The Millry Wildcats placed two on the first team in Class 1A as they too advanced to the state title game. Second baseman Dylan Whitsett and Taylor Owen were named to the first team. Sweet Water's Ty Glass was named to the first team as a pitcher. Ethan Chancey as a pitcher and Drew Luker at DH were named honorable mentions. In the AISA Clay Furrow was named to the first team at second base. Other area players honored were: first team-OF-Barry Meeks, Patrician, Sr.; DH - Chris Whitaker, Marengo Academy, Sr.; UT - Lance Gibson, Patrician, Sr.
Honorable Mention: Pitcher: Thomas Fultz, Marengo Acad., Sr.
