County water rate increase sought Jack Greer, Clarke County Utilities Superintendent, asked the County Commission Monday for increases to water consumption rates for the county water system. "Our suppliers have increased the cost of water to us," he said. "It has affected the revenues of the department." Under his proposal, "there is no change in the cost to the consumer until it gets to 10,000 gallons…. This rate increase is only going to affect a few people. Most people don't use 5,000 gallons of water a month." Greer said the cost per thousand above 10,000 from suppliers was increasing from $1.50 to $2.73 per thousand. The proposed increase would be $2.80 per thousand for Silver Creek customers, $2.70 for Winn customers and $2.40 for Zimco- Ebenezer customers. The rate increase would be effective Aug. 1, reflected on the September bills. In addition, Greer wanted the commission to consider "anytime that the department has a rate increase from the supplier, to pass that rate increase on to the consumer....I don't think we need to come back every time we have a rate increase and ask you to consider increasing the rates. You ought to do the same on the solid waste contract," he said. "We have a CPI (Consumer Price Index) increase every year. It has not affected us in the past, but it is going to get to the point where it is going to affect us. I would request that you would consider increasing the rates on the garbage collection by whatever rate the CPI increase is."
County Attorney Bruce Wilson expressed his concern that county water customers would not all be receiving a consistent price.
