Power outage knocks out 800

A power outage left parts of Grove Hill and Whatley in the dark for several hours Sunday.

Judy Graham, local Alabama Power manager, said power went out about 5 a.m. Sunday, affecting about 800 customers. Crews had much of Grove Hill restored by 8 a.m. but Graham said Sunday afternoon that it might be midnight before power would be restored to 300 to 500 customers in the Whatley area.

Some rsidents in the Whatley area did not have power restored until daylight Monday.

Graham said a malfunction at a Grove Hill substation was to blame for the outage.

The Grove Hill outage affected mostly the southern part of town. Electricity never went off in the northern parts of town since a different substation serves it.
