Danny Norris honored with Mathews Scholarship

The Community Foundation of South Alabama has awarded the 2007 Mathews Scholarship to Daniel (Danny) Norris, son of Terry and Dan Norris of Grove Hill.

Norris is a 2007 graduate of Clarke County High School. He maintained an excellent academic record while also participating in football, baseball and other extracurricular activities.

In addition to school activities, he could also be counted on in numerous volunteer activities from community clean-up days to serving as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army at Christmas. He is an active member of the Grove Hill United Methodist Church.

Norris will use the scholarship at Auburn University where he plans to major in education.

He wrote in his scholarship essay, "I have had many experiences where I felt like teaching would be the only thing for me. I would love knowing that my job would have a large impact on future generations. I would like to become a teacher because I have a very deep love for working with and just being around kids."

The purpose of the Mathews Scholarship is to support outstanding students who live in Clarke County and are entering the teaching profession.

The scholarship is given in honor of Doris P. and Forrest Lee Mathews, Louise Mathews Hearn and Louis Waldrum Mathews, children of Emma Bumpers and David Chapman Mathews. Many of these family members were involved in education in Clarke County.

Last year's winner was Kelsey Horton of Grove Hill. Scholarship information is held by the senior counselor at each Clarke County high school. Marion Bumpers serves as chair of the Mathews Scholarship Committee. For more information, call The Community Foundation of South Alabama in Mobile at 1-251-438-5591.
