Heaven for daylily lovers
By Jim Cox Editor and Publisher

'Catherine Neal' sounds familiar.
We arrived after the big sale and Cathy Jacobs apologized, saying many of the daylilies had quit blooming. Still, enough were blooming to produce an array of colors and thrill any daylily lover. It could be Daylily Heaven, for sure.

Cathy and Ricky Jacobs own Flora Impact Daylilies in Wing, Alabama, in south central Alabama, just shy of the Florida border.

Cathy tends to the daylilies fulltime while Ricky is a forester with the U.S. Forestry Service. He is often called to other states to help fight forest fires.

An annual sale is held the end of May and first of June with people coming from far and wide.

The garden next to their home features hundreds of daylilies. Visitors can wander the rows and pick out selections, using a lengthy list of the named varieties as a guide. The prices start around $8 to $10. Some of the more unusual specimens can run as high as $60 to $75 each.

Cathy Jacobs will dig your picks and tag them. She offers free advice on how to plant and care for them but says they are easy to grow. She fertilizes hers about twice a year with a common fertilizer such as 13-13-13. She has worked hard over the years to build up the soil in her garden, she notes. The land in her part of the state is usually very sandy and daylilies do like good soil.

'By Myself' is a brilliant yellow.
Also available are cannas in a variety of colors as well as elephant ears.

To get to Wing, take Highway 29 south from Andalusia and turn left on. Highway 137. Anyone who has been to the United Methodists' Blue Lake Camp will know the way. Wing is just a few miles past the Blue Blake turnoff.

They're open 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday during blooming season and 1-5 p.m. on Sundays.

The phone number is (334) 572-4176 and the e-mail address is jacobsrnc@ yahoo.com.

There's also a great local restaurant in Wing offering barbecue, sandwiches and more. It is a nice place to take a break after picking out your daylilies!
'Daisy Brousard' boasts ruffles.
'Satin Bird' has an orchid look to it.
'Nosferatu' brightens up dull spots!
You can't miss it. Look for the sign along Highway 137 in the heart of Wing, Ala.
