Ala. Southern hosts faculty workshops Community college and high school educators and counselors came face-to-face with the products, processes, and people of the vibrant pulp and paper industry this week. Participants received hands-on experience with the pulp and paper processes in Alabama Southern's world-class Pulp and Paper Technology Laboratories and through site visits to local pulp and paper production facilities. "This has been a great opportunity," said Grace Stallworth, Career Technical Counselor for Monroe County Vocational Center. "I now have a better understanding of the type of jobs offered in these facilities and I can take that knowledge back to educate my students on what they need to be prepared to apply for jobs in this field." At the completion of the institute, participants will be able to: Describe key processes in forest products processing: pulping, papermaking, paper recycling, and product testing • Demonstrate science and physics principles related to pulp and paper technology • Develop ways to incorporate pulp and paper concepts and learning materials into the classroom • Provide information about career opportunities in the pulp and paper industry The Institute is sponsored by the National Network for Pulp and Paper Technology Training (npt)², Alabama Southern Community College, and the National Science Foundation. Surrounded by eight pulp and paper mills (ARP, Boise, Weyerhaeuser, Georgia-Pacific, Rock- Tenn, Louisiana-Pacific and Temple-Inland) Alabama Southern's Thomasville campus is uniquely suited to host the institute.
