County bank expands into Mobile

Merchants Bank opened a new bank office in Mobile Friday, June 29. This is the bank's fifth location and its first outside of Clarke County.

The temporary office is located at 877 Hillcrest Road in the Hillcrest Plaza in West Mobile. A site is being sought for a permanent bank that will be built in the area.

"The Mobile region is experiencing tremendous economic growth, both present and future. That growth and other business activities, as well as support from our customers, encouraged us to open an office in the Mobile region, explained Grady L. Bedwell, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. "We look forward to becoming a part of the Mobile community and serving the banking needs of individuals and businesses."

Bedwell added that several sites were being looked at for future locations.

Matt Singleton is the new Senior Vice President and Regional Executive in charge of the Mobile office. Elizabeth Bailey is Administrative Assistant and Susan Simpson is Head Teller.

Merchants Bank was organized in Jackson by a group of local businessmen in 1962. It now has two locations in Jackson plus offices in Grove Hill and Thomasville. The bank has grown over 45 years from eight initial employees and assets of $400,000 to over 70 employees and assets of over $175 million today. The full service bank focuses on residential real estate, business and timberland loans and retail deposits.
