Grove Hill students attend Boys State

Drew Harrigan and Jake Paul
Jake Paul of Clarke County High School and Drew Harrigan of Clarke Preparatory School attended the 70th Annual Alabama Boys State at the University of Alabama June 10-16.

Alabama Boys State is a leadership program for young men who have completed their junior year of high school and are expected to be a campus leader during their senior year. It provides delegates with a working knowledge of how government functions on the city, county and state levels. Acceptance into Alabama Boys State is a privilege and granted by invitation only. Delegates are selected by their school faculty and commnunity leaders.

Alabama Boys State is sponsored by the American Legion and is directed by the retired Judge Pete Johnson of Birmingham. The assistant directors are Judge Joel Laird of Anniston and Ted Copland of Pickensville.

Paul was elected as a Boys State Senator. As a member of the Senate, he was able to speak on the Senate Floor in Montgomery.

He wrote a bill on holding a constitution convention for the state of Alabama. He gave several reasons why it is time for a change, along with a plan to make this convention successful. Paul's bill passed the senate with 34 of his fellow senators approving and only two senators disapproving.

Out of more than 80 bills in the Senate and House of Representatives, only 10 bills passed, including the bill authored by Jake Paul.

Harrigan ran for County Commissioner and easily won. As County Commissioner, Harrigan faced several challenges for perfecting his county.

The biggest achievement for Harrigan was the success he earned for persuading a car manufacturer to move into his county.

He had to make plans that were approved by his fellow Boys Staters to convince this company to come to Harrigan's county. Ultimately, Drew Harrigan and the other commissioners did a great job on adding productivity to their counties.

During the week, Paul and Harrigan heard from multiple speakers with inspiring messages. Congressman Artur Davis, State Treasurer Kay Ivey, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Sue Bell Cobb; President of The University of Alabama, Dr. Robert Witt; Commissioner of Public Services, Dr. Susan Parker, and former Boys State Attorney General and Cerebral Palsy patient Clint Usher were some of the speakers that left motivating words for the Boy Staters.

Jake Paul is the son of Teddy and Audra Paul and Drew Harrigan is the son of Chip and Susan Harrigan, all of Grove Hill.
