All-stars headed to state tourney
9 & 10-year-old group first to make it to state

The Grove Hill 9 & 10-year-old all-stars celebrate after winning the District championship.
The Grove Hill 9 & 10-year-old softball team fought their way to the District title and a berth in the state tournament as they beat Linden 8-5 last Thursday in Gilbertown.

Megan Davis went 3-for-3. Ashley Chapman and Kiana Coates each went 2-for-3. Megan Brooks, Shanda Pugh, Amberly Sheffield, Twyla Early and Roxanna Hare each had a hit and a walk. Kelsey Haynes added a hit. Tori Kearley, Mary Ellen McConnell and Gailyn Smith each drew a walk.

Smith started the game and pitched the first two innings. Brooks tossed the next two innings. Sheffield came on and pitched the last two innings to get the win.

Grove Hill 5, Linden 4

Grove Hill forced the championship game by beating a previously undefeated Linden team 5-4 last Wednesday. The game actually started Wednesday night and was completed at 12:28 Thursday morning.

Smith started the game and pitched two scoreless innings to get the win. Coates came on a nd pitched the final four to get a save.

Haynes went 2-for-3. Davis, Hare and Coates each had a hit and a walk. Pugh and Chapman each had a hit. Sheffield drew two walks. Kearley, Early, Smith and McConnell each had a walk.

Grove Hill 5, Butler 4

In a game that stretched out over three days and saw two different stopping points, Grove Hill beat Butler 5-4 to advance to the championship series last Wednesday.

The first time the game was halted Grove Hill was losing 4-1 in the third inning on Monday, June 25. After getting to restart the game the next day rains again forced a delay. This time Grove Hill was still losing 4-1, but had the bases loaded with one out in the sixth inning.

McConnell drew a 2-out walk to force in a run, making it 4-2. Then Hare came to the plate and with two outs and two strikes, drove a triple up the middle to clear the bases, giving Grove Hill a 5-4 win.

Hare and Pugh each had a triple. Chapman and Early each added a hit. Sheffield had an RBI. McConnell, Smith and Davis each had a walk.

Grove Hill 10, Gilbertown 7

Grove Hill kept their title hopes alive as they eliminated host team Gilbertown 10-7 on Saturday afternoon, June 23.

Hare, Haynes, Kearley and Sheffield all went 2-for-3. McConnell, Early and Smith each had a hit and a walk. Pugh had a hit and two walks. Brooks had a hit. Davis and Chapman each had a walk.

Smith got the win as she pitched five innings.

Linden 4, Grove Hill 1

Grove Hill suffered their first loss of the tournament Saturday, 4-1 to Linden.

Early and Smith had a hit. Haynes had a hit and a walk. Coates drew two walks. Kearley, Sheffield, Pugh, Davis and Chapman each had one walk.

Smith shouldered the loss.

Grove Hill 20, Thomasville 13

Grove Hill opened the tournmament in Gilbertown by beating arch-rival Thomasville 20-13 on Friday, June 22.

Coates went 3-for-4 with a walk. McConnell, Hare, Smith, Sheffield, Pugh and Davis each went 2-for-4 with a walk. Chapman and Kearley each went 2-for-4. Haynes went 1-for-4 with a walk. Early was 1-for-4. Brooks drew two walks.

Smith earned the win. Davis, Kearley, Coates and Hare all pitched as well.

Grove Hill's 9 & 10-year-old softball all-stars now become the first team to advance to the state tournament.

On Friday they take on the District 3 champion in Scottsboro at 8 p.m.

"I want to thank Jeff Davis and Charles Brooks for working with the pitchers," head coach Milton Sheffield said. "I also want to thank Mirenda Hare, Penny Law, Randy Smith and Allen Jordan for their help in coaching the girls."

Sheffield also heaped praise on the parents and fans who followed the girls through the tournament.

"The whole team wants to thank Circuit Clerk Jay Duke for sponsoring us through out the tournaments," Sheffield added.
