One arrested, more expected in property theft
Law enforcement agencies in Clarke and Monroe Counties have received reports of stolen lawn mowers, ATVs, four-wheelers and utility trailers over the past few weeks. On Monday Clarke County Sheriff's Department was informed about a suspicious truck in the Gosport community. Chief Deputy Vergil Chapman, Chief Investigator Ron Baggette, Grove Hill Police Chief Leo Frazier and DA Investigator Don Lolley responded and found the truck. The tag was run and lawmen learned the tag had been switched and the 1996 Ford F- 250 had been stolen from Pensacola Tractor in Pensacola, Fla. William Clarence Denson was driving the stolen truck and he was arrested. A search of the truck yielded various keys to lawn mowers, ATVs and four-wheelers as well as other burglary tools. Denson was charged with receiving stolen property, possession of burglary tools and possession of alcohol. "During our interview with Denson we learned that there were some stolen ATVs and utility trailers in Mobile and Prichard," Investigator Baggett said. Baggette, Chief Deputy Chapman, Lolley and Captain Terry Mason of Monroe County Sheriff's Department went to the sites and along with officers from Mobile and Prichard Police Departments, recovered two ATVs and two utility trailers. The stolen equipment was brought back to Clarke County.
"We are asking residents to keep an eye out. Report any suspicious vehicles you see loading up lawn mowers, four wheelers or utility trailers to us at 1-251- 275-3375 or 1-251-275-8132," Chapman said.
