Literacy Coalition working with White-Smith library "Our goal is to serve those (organizations) who are working with literacy issues," said Carolyn Douglas, executive director of the Literacy Coalition of South Alabama. "Our ultimate client is that individual who is struggling with a literacy problem." She spoke Monday to the Clarke County Commission. Douglas is working with White- Smith Memorial Library in Jackson on developing an adult literacy program. The coalition was formed in 1999 in Mobile. The group has evolved into a regional organization, she said, and they serve Mobile, Baldwin, Washington and Clarke Counties. Asberry Daffin III of Jackson represents Clarke County on the coalition's Board of Directors. "We advocate, coordinate, promote and support literacy for all," Douglas said. "We don't do the actual direct services….Our job is to work with those organizations that are already doing this kind of activity." The coalition also tries to address any gap in services. Douglas provided data to the commission that 45 percent of the adult population is undereducated She will be back in Clarke County on July 27 for a meeting at the White-Smith Memorial Library. "We will continue to be in Clarke County on a regular basis," Douglas said.
There needs to be different types of venues to help individuals with literacy needs. "One size does not fit all," she said. The coalition can help provide training or bring in people to train county individuals.
