Repairs completed on lift station spill
By Barry H. Hendrix Managing Editor

Repairs have been completed on the Windsorwood Lift Station, where there was a sewage spill, said Mayor Sheldon Day at Monday's meeting of the Thomasville Water Works and Sewer Board.

There was some "contact issues," he said. "The contacts would not stay engaged and caused it to throw breakers."

A monitoring system has been installed. "It is now being monitored 24 hours/seven days a week," the mayor said. "…We're visually checking it twice-a-day." If there is a problem, dispatch will get an alarm.

A road has also been built across the creek so the manholes can be supervised.

"We've done a substantial cleanup down there. We put out lime. We have worked closely with ADEM (Alabama Department of Environmental Management). They have made recommendations about dirt work around the manholes to steer any possible run over of sewage from going into the creek.

"We still haven't gotten any final ruling from ADEM on the spill…but they were pleased with our reaction and how we responded to the spill," he said. "We worked hard to get the issue taken care of. I feel like we've done everything we can do to remedy the situation."

In other action from the Monday meeting, Mayor Day declared the water supply as "better than normal for this time of the year. We're up to maximum capacity," he said.

• A pre-construction meeting for the LP (Louisiana Pacific mill) water and sewer project will be held the first of next week. Cardinal Contracting will supervise the construction, and the mayor expects to see some equipment moving.

• A new policy and procedures template is being developed for water tap fees, the mayor said. "This would spell out every situation," he said. "How we address overbilling? How we address (extensions)?

"We need to bring our policies and procedures into the 21st century, updated to a template that USDA recommends."
