Town of Fulton creates Recreation Board
By Barry H. Hendrix Managing Editor

The Fulton Town Council Tuesday approved members for the creation of a recreation board. Council members Jennifer Stephens and Kim Averitt will be joined by Phillip Averitt, James Stabler, Mike Bettis and Heather Allday.

The board is looking for one more member. There was a question to whether Stephens and Averitt and their husbands could all serve on the Recreation Board. Mayor Norris said, according to the League of Municipalities, they could serve, but a couple will only equal one vote on the board.

In other action from the Tuesday meeting, phase two of the sidewalk project is being closed out, the mayor said.

He was disappointed with the performance of Sentell Engineering on phase two. Sentell has agreed to reduce their fee by half to $1,656.

Engineering plans are underway for phase three, which will include the creek crossing.

• The deadline to finish the sewer project is July 20. There is only one house left to be hooked up. There is a lot of cleanup yet to be done, Mayor Norris said. The Fulton Utility Board will meet July 31 to setup billing for sewer.

• The mayor is receiving bids for the black top for the walking track at the old school. The base has already been prepared. He is also getting prices to pave an area for 10 parking places.

Mayor Norris planned to travel July 11 to Montgomery to meet with Joe McInnes, director of the Alabama Department of Transportation.

Norris had previously sent a letter to Governor Bob Riley concerning paving needs in Fulton. The cost of the current sewer project had been so high that the town had to postpone needed paving. Many Fulton roads had been cut up through the process of the sewer project.

In a letter sent to the Fulton mayor, Riley said "he's on board with us," Norris said. "He appreciated what we've been doing down here. All he hears is about Fulton because this is the third Department of Transportation grant that we've gotten for the sidewalks…plus the walking trail."

• The town received a $50,000 grant from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) for a permanent 80,000 kw generator at the town well. The match cost to the town will be $12,000. The town, Mid Central Water and the Fulton Utility Board will each pay $4,000 of the match cost.

• Robert D. Beck was appointed to the Fulton Utility Board to replace J. M. Bradford.

• The council voted to move $35,000 from the general fund to the Fulton Project Improvement Account, bringing it to a total of $185,000.

• The old town truck was declared surplus and sold to Buddy Wilson for $300.

• Marvin Lynn was hired to cut grass for the town.
