Our Opinions At long last, the new courthouse annex is completed. A ribbon-cutting was held Monday to formally open the new $3.5 million twostory addition to the Clarke County Courthouse. County commissioners held their first meeting in a new commissioners and probate courtroom in the annex Monday. The new meeting space is a big improvement over the old cramped quarters. But the main purpose of the new building is the two new courtrooms on the second floor. Now, each of two circuit judges can have their own courtroom. As it has been, the two circuit judges and the county district judge had to play musical chairs with the single usable courtroom. The added courtrooms will put an end to the constant juggling and will be good for the public who must use the court system. In addition, the new annex provides new chambers for the circuit judges and their staffs and other needed county office space. Historically, Clarke County has had to update its courthouse facilities about every 50 years or so since the courthouse was initially located in Grove Hill in 1832. This latest work falls right in line with that time line since the main courthouse was built in 1955. The annex isn't without its glitches but overall it is a very utilitarian and practical space. J. C. Duke Contractors constructed the building. Danny Broadhead was Duke's project manager and county employee Tank Wilson was the county's construction manager. Both men as well as all of the workers did a commendable job.
Hopefully, this new addition will serve the county and its citizens well for the next 50 or more years. However, with the way the county is growing we may not make it another 50 years before we need to expand again!
