Walker is new CPS headmaster
By Kathryn F. Pickard News Reporter

"Clarke Preparatory School has a reputation of being a good school. I want to be a part of making it an even better school," said David Walker, the Grove Hill school's new headmaster.

Walker has been in the education field over 30 years. He started out at Escambia Academy where he was a teacher and coach and served as headmaster for four of the 11 years he was there. He then went to Morgan Academy where he was headmaster for 11 years. From there he went to Greenville Academy where he served as headmaster for three years.

Before coming to CPS he was the director of instruction at Morgan Academy.

"The headmaster we had at Morgan, Dr. Christopher deBuzna, is retiring. It was hard learning to work under him and I really didn't know if I was ready to work under another headmaster. Even though I had been a headmaster I learned a lot from him and I am ready to be a headmaster again," Walker said.

During four of his last five years at Morgan the school was awarded the President's Award for 3A schools, which is the highest academic honor awarded by the AISA.

"I'm proud to have been a part of that," he said.

Walker has coached every sport in his schools except baseball and his teams have won over 600 basketball games. "It's not because I'm good, it's because I've been there awhile," he laughed.

Another reason for coming to CPS is that he would be closer to his wife's parents and to their daughter and her three daughters.

He and his wife Martha have been married 39 years and have three children. Their daughter Laura lives in Spanish Fort and has three daughters. Their son Brian lives in Atlanta and has a daughter. Their son Jonathan is a junior at Auburn University.

Martha Walker will be teaching fourth grade at CPS.

Because of his involvement in AISA schools he already knows many of the faculty members at the private schools in Clarke County.

"I've known a lot of people who work here a number of years. I am familiar with a lot of people and it makes it nice," he said.

Walker will attend his first board meeting this week and plans to present a few new ideas to board members. "I'm not going to come in and turn things upside down. I've learned that someone else's plans don't always work for me and some things will have to be done my way.

"It's my job and the job of the faculty here to take Clarke Prep in the direction the board wants to go. Any changes will be a joint effort from the whole school," he said.
