Approximately 50 people gathered at Jackson Medical Center, Thursday, July 12, to honor those who responded to the near-drownings of two toddlers near Jackson, March 8.

The agencies recognized included the Alabama State Troopers, Jackson Police Department, Jackson Emergency Transport Service (JETS), Life- Flight personnel, Jackson Fire Department, Emergency Management and Dr. Jarred Ellis. Those responding helped save the lives of John Thomas Atchison and Cole Hicks after they were discovered in a pool located behind a home day care.

State Trooper Daryl Linder was appropriately the first to be recognized, because he was the first on the scene. As soon as he arrived he began to administer CPR to the Atchison child.

Also honored was Jackson Police Officer Carey Slayton who arrived a short time later, pulled the Hicks child from the pool and began to administer CPR.

Other individuals recognized included JETS employees Rodney Johnson, Henry Eubanks, Scott Flach and Alan Rutledge, Emergency Management personnel Kenny Reeves and Stacey Rutledge, Jackson Police Officer Barry Fowler, dispatcher Cynthia Baldwin, Dr. Ellis and LifeFlight personnel Larry Hall and Ben Rumbley.

Lee Rumbley, outreach coordinator for Baptist LifeFlight conducted the ceremony and presented the recognitions. Joe Hunt, representing the Clarke County Commission, read a proclamation adopted by the governing body recognizing those who participated in the rescue efforts.

District 65 State Representative Marc Keahey presented the group with a resolution from the state commending all of the responding agencies and the individuals involved. Rep. Keahey read the resolution, part of which stated, "In times of crisis there is no greater comfort than the knowledge that the good citizens of the state of Alabama, especially those saluted here, are willing to give so unselfishly of their time and efforts to help their neighbors, precious lives may be saved when various agencies cooperate in a caring professional and well-trained manner as exemplified by these responders in Jackson."

Both children and their parents were present for the ceremony and were given toy helicopters by the LifeFlight personnel.

John Thomas Atchison appears to have fully recovered from the ordeal. Cole Hicks, who was underwater for a longer period of time, is still undergoing rehabilitation at his home in Jackson.
