Newman

Joseph Cris Newman Jr., 81, of Whatley died July 10, 2007 at his residence.

He was a native of Phoebus, Va. He served in the United States Air Force in World War II and Korea, retiring as technical sergeant, E6. He was a life member of the VFW Post 5106 Thomasville and was past post commander. He was a retired sheet metal mechanic with the civil service.

Survivors include his wife, Carol N. Newman, Whatley; one son, Richard Newman, Titusville, Fla.; three stepsons, Mike Bartoszek, Killeen, Texas, Paul Bartoszek, Leavenworth, Kansas, Dennis Gundlach, Las Vegas, Nev.; one daughter, Olga Branum, New Orleans, La.; one brother, Albert Newman, Fayetteville, Penn.; two sisters, Shirley Cleland, Houston, Texas, Pat Saballa, Katy, Texas; 13 grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; extended families - the Rosales and Duponts.

The service was July 13 at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home in Grove Hill with full military honors at Dacy Cemetery in Whatley.
