Whatley
He was born July 9, 1924. He was a native of Jackson. He was a longtime resident of Mobile. After spending one year studying Mechanical Engineering at Auburn Polytechnic Institute, he enlisted in the Army and served during World War II in New Guinea and the Philippines as a Sound Ranging Observer in Battery B of the 289th Field Artillery Observation Battalion. He began a career with National Airlines (Later Pan Am) in 1947, and retired with 34 years of service in 1981. He married Helen Aletha Johnson on March 23, 1950. They celebrated 55 years of marriage until her passing in July 2005. He was a longtime active member of Fulton Heights United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Lee Frederick Whatley and Glenn William Whatley, both of Mobile; one daughter, Helen Ann (Stephen) Kahalley, Mobile; one sister Nancy Whatley Wingard of Birmingham, eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A private family graveside service was held in Mobile Memorial Gardens July 7 at 11:30 a.m. Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home of Mobile directed.
