Arrests made and stolen property recovered in Jax Two Prichard men are in custody after Jackson police officers found loads of stolen property in their possession in the early morning hours, Sunday, July 22. According to police reports, Sgt. Josh Garrett was on routine patrol around 2:15 a.m., when he turned around to pursue a 1996 Oldsmobile 88, which was passing a 1999 Ford Explorer in the turn lane while traveling south on College Avenue at State Street. He pursued the vehicle to Kimball Avenue and Church Street where the driver jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot. Assisted by Officers Arvis Slack and Ben Marshall, a sweep of the area was conducted in search of the suspect. While the search was taking place, officers notice a red Ford Explorer, which kept circling the area. The officers pulled over the vehicle, which was occupied by Tony Davis and a 17-year-old Juvenile, both of Prichard. During a search of the SUV they found a large amount of checks belonging to Check Express, which has locations in both Jackson and Thomasville. Also discovered were numerous electronics items. Jackson police officers had responded to an alarm at Check Express around 11:30 p.m., Saturday, but were unable to notify the manager. At that time the building appeared to be secure. Also found in the suspects' vehicle were four laptop computers, a desktop computer, monitor, portable high definition DVD player, six sets of headphones, two music mixers, a guitar pedal, one air compressor, one digital camera, three global positioning system (GPS) devices, a one gigabyte ram hard drive, a 128 megabyte ram hard drive, a Blue Tooth unit, Apple I-Pod, one wireless headset, a Sony DVD player and two bank bags containing $15.91 in change. Inside the Oldsmobile, officers found similar items, which included two AT&T Blackberries, a Nokia Trac Fone, A Nokia Mine cellular phone, a Singular cellular phone, two apple I-Phones, two Dell Latitude S10s, two JVC digital video receivers, a Canon digital camera, one Devalt drill, one sony AC adapter, two Singular sim cards, a Motorola cellular phone, one Black and Decker 400-watt power converter, a power remote for a computer and 190 checks belonging to Check Express. A total of $91,000 in property and checks was recovered, according to Jackson Police Chief Charles Burge. The chief went on to say that a repair tag form Gabe's Computer Repair, located in the Pine City Village shopping center on College Avenue, was found on one of the pieces of computer equipment. This led officers to discover that the rear door of that business, as well as the vacant building next door, had been broken into. Further investigation, later Sunday, revealed that the Check Express had indeed been burglarized along with the Cash Advance next door. That business had been burglarized Wednesday, July 18, at which time an undetermined amount of cash was stolen. During that incident the wires to the alarm had been cut prior to the burglars gaining entrance through the rear door of the business. The theft of a four-wheeler key was also reported at LA Powersports, which is located on U.S. Highway 43 just north of the city limits. Investigator Richard Harvey said it has not been determined whether that and the burglaries which occurred over the weekend are related to the Cash Advance burglary. A bag of cash, believed to have been tossed during early Sunday morning pursuit, was found by a citizen later that day and turned into police. Similar burglaries, which occurred in Thomasville, Saturday, are believed to have been committed by the suspects. There the Altell, Rite Aid and Check Express were burglarized and it was discovered that the Oldsmobile was stolen from the Check Express. "The Mobile Police Department is also interested in talking with the two suspects, who they believe may be involved in several unsolved burglaries there," said Chief Burge. A small amount of marijuana was also found in the suspects' possession, resulting in a possession charge, to go along with the four counts of third degree burglary they are now facing. The subject, whom officers were originally in pursuit of has not yet been located.
"Sgt. Garret and his shift tend to check the small things, which in police work often turn out to be larger things, such as was the case Sunday," said Chief Burge. "They are a hard working shift and do an outstanding job. This is one of the largest recoveries of stolen property in Jackson in recent years and they are to be commended for their efforts."
