ASCC program will help LPNs earn associate degrees Alabama Southern Community College in Thomasville will begin a new program in January 2008 that will allow Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to earn their Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) by attending class in the evenings and on weekends. "The upward mobility program is an LPN to RN program; that is, credit is given for the LPN coursework the student has already successfully completed" said Kathy Nelson, Department Head of the Practical Nursing program and nursing instructor. "Alternate scheduling allows nurses to work during the day, and further their education by attending classes in the evening." The evening and weekend program will take three or four semesters, depending on courses completed by the LPN and date of graduation. "We are very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to our students," said Dr. John A. Johnson, President of Alabama Southern Community College. "This program is just another way that we are striving to better serve the citizens of southwest Alabama and increase the level and quality of healthcare workers that we train." Nursing classes and support classes such as math, English and biology will be offered on evenings throughout the week. Clinical experiences where students practice skills learned in the classroom will be scheduled on weekends. Clinical practice time will be spent at Southwest Alabama Medical Center in Thomasville, Grove Hill Memorial Hospital, Monroe County Hospital, Bryan Whitfield Memorial Hospital in Demopolis, Searcy Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Springhill Hospital in Mobile and possibly others. The application deadline for this program will be March 1, 2008.
