Fire Dr. Kennedy

Alabama two year college Chancellor Bradley Byrne didn't do the best job in negotiating Bishop State Community College President Yvonne Kennedy's retirement recently, given the large scandal that has enveloped the Mobile based college.

Dr. Kennedy, who is also a state legislator, was president of Bishop State for over 25 years. So far, 27 have been indicted for misconduct there. Dr. Kennedy hasn't been indicted for anything, but as president of the institution she must be held accountable for her failure to see and correct wrongdoings that happened on her watch.

Instead, Chancellor Byrne agreed to award her the honorary title of president emeritus with a campus office so that she can write a history of Bishop State.

She was also instructed by Byrne to fire David Thomas, a Bishop administrator convicted of a hitand run felony for leaving the scene of an accident in which an 8-year-old girl was injured.

That was several weeks ago. To date, Thomas still holds his $89,000-a-year job.

He needs to go and Dr. Kennedy needs to go with him.

Bishop is going to require a lot of fixing and she doesn't need an office anywhere on campus that could be perceived as hampering that reform.

As for a history of the school, that doesn't need to be written until the current scandal is resolved and she certainly isn't the person to write it.

Finally, she has ignored or delayed a direct order to get rid of a problem administrator. Bradley Byrne says he sees it as insubordination but apparently hasn't chosen to pursue the matter.

Several school board members want her terminated but he says a special school board meeting to address the issue isn't the way to handle the matter.

We disagree. Fire Dr. Kennedy. Now.
