Problems not worth revenue
The "Citizens Against Alcohol Sales in Thomasville" group held its last formal meeting Tuesday night at the Thomasville Church of God in Christ. Moore has served as chairman of the group since March 2006. "We understand that we don't wrestle against flesh and blood in this battle with alcohol," he said. "We're wrestling against spirits and powers in high places. Alcohol has a strong hold over this nation. "The people on the 'wet' side are not our ene- mies. They are our neighbors…. We pray that God will open up blind eyes." "It's a sad state that we find ourselves in," said CAAST supporter David Bagley. "We need help." He asked for citizens to put on their walking shoes and get the word out. "It's not worth the revenue," Moore said about alcohol sales. Many speakers Tuesday night made allusions to the city's money problems. "This alcohol referendum is about a lot of things," Moore said. "One of the things we have been talking about is fiscal responsibility, about having some control over some of the spending that is going on in the city. "…We're a debtor nation. Let's not be a debtor city." Several at the meeting also stressed that the city would likely not stop with alcohol sales but would eventually add one to two-cent sales tax. The CAAST group plans to distribute 2,500 handouts doorto door on the remaining Saturday mornings before the Aug. 14 vote. There will be a telephone campaign, and information will be mailed to each registered voter in the city. The current total of registered voters in Thomasville quoted at the Tuesday meeting was approximately 2,811. "I take a stand on my personal convictions," said Thomasville City Council Member Charles Allen, who was against the referendum being held in the first place. "I don't change it at city hall, versus the church. I'm obligated to serve the people. They entrusted duties and responsibilities in my hands. "I'm there to decide what I feel is personally good for the community, and I feel like that (the referendum) was not a good thing for us to do." Moore said Allen stood his ground at the council meetings against alcohol sales. "Many times he would be the lone wolf crying in the wilderness, standing up for what is right." In addition, Moore said the group would be filing its political committee organization paperwork in the coming days with the county Probate Office. "We don't have anything to hide," he said. In other action from the Tuesday meeting, Dr. Dan Ireland of Alabama Citizens Action Program (ALCAP) will speak at the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services on Aug. 12 at Thomasville Baptist Church. • There will also be prayer walks throughout neighborhoods in Thomasville.
• A prayer breakfast will be held at 6:30 a.m. on Aug. 14 at Pineview Baptist Church. The CAAST group is asking other churches to be open on election day for a prayer vigil the entire day.
