Clarke schools ready to begin 2007-08 year Clarke County school personnel are preparing for the opening of school. In his report to the county Board of Education July 25, Superintendent Gerald Stephens said that Teacher Institute will be held at 9 a.m. on Aug. 6 at Grove Hill Elementary School. There will be technology training for professional staff Aug. 7 and 8 at both Grove Hill Elementary and Jackson High School. Technology training for principals will be held Aug. 1 at the Parenting Center at the board office. The principals meeting will be Aug. 2 also at the Parenting Center, and the first day for students in the county system will Aug. 9. The Grove Hill Methodist Church will host a welcome breakfast for teachers at 8 a.m. on Aug. 8. Jackson United Methodist Church will host a welcome breakfast at 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Aug. 7. In addition, Stephens predicted that Phase One of the construction of the new buildings at the Clarke County High School will be completed by Jan. 1, 2008. Classrooms are being completed at Grove Hill Elementary School, and work continues on the scoreboards and lighting for the new softball and baseball fields. Approximately $40,000 in doors was purchased for Jackson High School. "Nothing's cheap anymore," he said. In other action from the July 25 Board of Education meeting, increases in compensation for substitute teachers were approved. Pay for personnel other than bus drivers will increase from $40 to $55-perday. Bus driver substitutes will receive an increase from $30 to $35-per-day. • The following bids were approved at the July 25 board meeting: A $30,795.50 low bid from Stanbury of Brookfield, Mo. for the CCHS band uniforms. A bid from Flowers Bakery for bread and bread products for the Child Nutrition Program (CNP). A bid from Dairy Fresh for ice cream (CNP). A bid from Barbers for milk (CNP). Other CNP supplies will be purchased from bids by Newell or Central Supply. • The following personnel changes were approved: Kasey Fleming resigned as librarian at Jackson Intermediate, and Rebecca Garrick resigned as the alternative school manager. Danny Chancey was reemployed as counselor at Jackson High School. Abby Beverly was transferred from countywide nurse to school nurse at Jackson High School, and Merlin Rocker was transferred from kindergarten teacher to interim counselor at Gillmore Elementary School. Teacher Emily Rocker McDonald was approved for family medical/catastrophic sick leave. The following persons have been employed by the county system: Anthony Johnson, driver's education for CCHS, Coffeeville High and Jackson High, and assistant coach at Jackson High. Kristen Donald, elementary teacher at Gillmore. Debbie Miller, social studies teacher at CCHS. Sonya Meyer, coordinated school health nurse. Debbie Stead, Jackson Middle School CNP cashier. Jeanette Lawson, CNP for Jackson Intermediate. Leo Frazier, $100-a-month supplement as assistant basketball coach/security at CCHS. • Bills and accounts paid for June totaled $776,622.42. The payroll for June totaled $1,928,630.58.
• The next board meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on Aug. 9 and will feature the first hearing for the fiscal 2008 budget. The second budget hearing will be held at 4 p.m. on Aug. 30.
