Clarke County schools prepare for return of students

Students are winding down their summer and gathering school supplies and uniforms for the upcoming school year. Some local municipalities and the county have chosen to participate in the state's sales tax holiday this weekend. School supplies, computers and uniforms, as well as other types of supply and clothing purchases, will be exempt from state, county and some local taxes.

Schools in Clarke County begin next week. Students in the Clarke County School System, at Clarke Preparatory School and in Thomasville City Schools return to school Aug. 9. Students return to Jackson Academy Aug. 8.

Clarke County High School

Students and faculty members at Clarke County High School are looking forward to moving into the new school building once it is completed. According to principal, Debra Dennis, they are already working towards the move. The facility is expected to be ready by mid-term.

New teachers at the school include Kim Stanley, math teacher; Debbie Miller, history teacher; Tiffany Jackson, math teacher and Monique Bryant, special education teacher.

Parents or students are asked to pick up their schedules before Tuesday, Aug. 7 at the school from 8 a.m. until 12 noon and from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m.

"We are looking forward to moving into our new high school and we look forward to seeing our students," Dennis said.

Wilson Hall Middle School

Wilson Hall Middle School will welcome 400 students this year.

New teachers at the school are Beverly Bush, special education teacher and Sheila Finch, sixth grade math teacher.

Registration will be held at the school Monday, Aug. 6, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Students can bring their supplies to school and meet their new teachers that afternoon.

"We are waiting on our test scores to see how we did last year. We look forward to seeing the students and we are ready to start the new year," said Larry Bagley, principal.

Grove Hill Elementary School

The third and fourth grade pods at Grove Hill Elementary School have been divided into actual classrooms. Over the summer walls were built to divide the pods.

"Meet the Teacher Night" will be held Monday, Aug. 6 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. School supplies should be brought at this time.

Students will be allowed to wear any color tennis shoe, as long as they have closed toes and heels.

New faculty and staff members at the school are Coquesa Dotson, a new first grade teacher and Kim Sheffeild, a new office assistant.

"We are really looking forward to the new year and to our students coming back," said Kathy Spidle, principal.

Clarke Preparatory School

Students and faculty at Clarke Prep welcome new headmaster, David Walker.

The school will also have new fifth and sixth grade teachers this year.

Open House will be held Thursday, Aug. 9 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

"Everybody's gearing up and getting ready for school to begin. It's been busy around here, but we are ready to get started," Walker said.

Coffeeville High School

There are several new teachers at Coffeeville High School this year, including Rhonda Wright, first grade teacher; Brenda Poellnitz, high school science teacher; and Bridgett Powell, special education teacher.

A windbreaker style jacket is now part of the uniform dress code. Contact the school office for more information.

Thomasville High School

Thomasville High School welcomes new principal Kyle Ferguson.

Also new at the school are Jerrell Allen, the new band director; Katherine Pitts, math teacher; Vickie Charleston, career tech teacher; Cherish Ingram, special education teacher; and Sophia Brothers, cafeteria employee. The school also hopes to employ a new Spanish teacher.

A new course will be offered in the career tech department this year. Students have the opportunity to take Beginning Introduction to Nursing.

Orientation was held earlier this week and students are asked to pick up their schedules before school begins.

Thomasville Middle School

Students at Thomasville Middle School will have a new type of schedule this year. They will use an alternating day schedule that will allow them to take eight classes every semester.

Seventh and eighth grade students can take pre-advanced math and language classes. Students can also take advantage of the tutoring offered during the school day or and other enrichment opportunities.

Some of the new electives offered include drama, chorus and digital photography.

The school will also be serving breakfast this year.

New faculty at the school includes William Combs, assistant principal; Thomas Papworth, eighth grade social studies; Sherry Brewer, seventh grade math and Donna Reid, secretary.

Orientation will be held Monday, Aug. 6 at 4 p.m. for fifth and sixth graders and Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 4 p.m. for seventh and eighth graders in the school cafeteria.

Thomasville

Elementary School

Thomasville Elementary School welcomes new principal, Adam Sealy and part-time assistant principal Jimmie Rose Bryant.

Teachers at the school attended AMSTI training this summer and are anxious to implement what they have learned.

Orientation will be held Thursday, Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. for students in kindergarten; Monday, Aug. 6 at 5 p.m. for students in third grade and at 6 p.m. for students in the fourth grade; and Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 5 p.m. for students in the first grade and at 6 p.m. for students in the second grade.

Jackson High School

Jackson High School welcomes new principal Ken Harbuck as well as several other new faculty members. Harbuck, a Jackson native and Jackson High graduate, moved back from the Mobile area.

Danny Chancey is the new counselor at the school. Other new faculty members include Jody Reeves Wade, math teacher and cheerleader coach; Gwen White, special education teacher; Anthony Ezell, special education teacher; Cara Green, special education aide; Landon Hilt, drivers education teacher and assistant coach, and Tony Johnson, drivers education teacher and coach.

Students in the 11th and 12th grades are asked to pick up their schedules Thursday (today) Aug. 2, between 9 a.m. and 12 noon and between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Students in the ninth and 10th grades are asked to pick their schedules Friday, Aug. 3 during the same hours.

Orientation will be held for new students and ninth graders Monday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m.

"Things are really exciting around here. I'm excited to be coming home and I am looking for a great year," Harbuck said.

Jackson Middle School

Students at Jackson High School will be enjoying the new cafeteria this year.

The same faculty members will be welcoming students back to school.

Registration will be held at the school Thursday (today), Aug. 2 at 5:30 p.m. Supplies can be brought to the school at this time.

An addition has been made to the uniform dress policy. Students can now wear "Aggie purple" shirts.

"We're looking forward to having a good year," Principal Jessie Taylor said.

Jackson Intermediate School

Students at Jackson Intermediate School will be enjoying a new state of the art computer lab. They will also be clustered according to their reading level.

New faculty members include Tracy Marks, the new secretary and Christine White, the new special education teacher.

Students will be allowed to wear any color tennis shoe they want.

Registration for third grade students will be held Monday, Aug. 6 at 5 p.m. and fourth and fifth grade registration will be held Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 5 p.m. A short orientation will be presented before parents and students visit the classrooms.

"We are looking forward to a new year. We're doing a lot of new and exciting things here and I think our students will benefit. I am looking forward to the kids being back in school and I am looking forward to working with the students and their parents. We appreciate everyone's support," Mike Bedsole, principal, said.

Gillmore Elementary School

"Meet the Teacher Day" will be held at Gillmore Elementary School Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. School supplies should be brought at this time.

Students will be allowed to wear any color tennis shoe. Shoes with open toes or heels, wheels and slip-on shoes are not allowed.

Jackson Academy

Jackson Academy welcomes former headmaster Rance Carr back to his old position.

Parents, school personnel and students now have a way to check on test schedules, homework, class assignments as well as other information through Edline. The system can also be used with third party software to check grades.

"We believe that this program will help improve communications between parents and the school, allowing us to work together to ensure our students' success. With this new system and our renewed focus on academics, we believe this will be a great school year," Assistant Headmaster Janiece Atchison said.

"Supply Night" will be held Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 6 p.m. School supplies can be brought at this time.
