House plans and other urban projects keeps draftsman busy
By Kathryn F. Pickard News Reporter

Michael Sherrod
Michael Sherrod, draftsman and owner of Sherrod Drawings in Jackson, has clients all over the United States.

"I can't tell you how often I have seen Pensacola Airport. I travel a lot. My main client is in Miami and in Austin, Texas and Montgomery," he said.

Sherrod designs houses and urban planning projects. Those designs are used by other planners, architects and designers.

"My drawings help with the details for contractors, for beauty and function, that help a house last longer," he explained.

From north Alabama

The Toney, Ala native earned his associates degree in drafting at Calhoun College in Decatur.

"Before this I was manager at a Hardees and then I worked at a hospital. I decided to start with an associates degree in drafting. Once I got my certified degree I went to work for an architect in Huntsville.

"About three years ago the business closed and we decided to move to Jackson, where I had family, and set up shop. I love Jackson and I love working with the residential clients here. I plan to go back for a four year degree but for now the associates degree has worked out pretty well," he said.

One of Sherrod's designs. "Country setting- spacious farm house inspired designed. Wide 'visiting' front porch, shared views for the most light of the rising and setting sun. 1,379 square feet on first floor, 1,341 squae feet on second floor. Four bedrooms and 2.5 or 3.5 baths.
Sherrod helped design the Katrina Cottages for the mobile home manufacturers.

"After Hurricane Katrina a lot of people were left without homes. We helped design a mobile home that looked more like a house. It cost a little more than a typical mobile home but it's a lot nicer."

Another project he was involved with was a community called The Waters. "It's an entire town that's walkable. The businesses, the schools and everything is within walking distance."

Creating Jackson park project

He is currently working on the park project for the City of Jackson. "I got the job for this park and my son, Ben, turned in a drawing for another park. His design was picked to be integrated into that park project."

Some of his designs have been used by architects which were published in Southern Living and other magazines.

"I would like for Sherrod Drawings to be a trade name. I would like to have a book with Sherrod Drawings in it. There are so many different house plans. My goal is to have the correct details in these house plan books," he said.

Sherrod is producing a Jackson house book of plans which he says contains house plans that will fit in well with the other homes and buildings in Jackson.

"Most of my day is spent in front of the computer and meeting with clients. I also have people call about prices on house plan services. Some days just fly by. I'd like to be busy enough to employ others.

"It takes years in the field learning to help clients. I have to figure out what they want in a house and help them design a home the way they want it. It gets frustrating at times, when you go through three and four renditions, but you must remember, you're providing a service," he said.

Started working in 3-D

Sherrod has recently begun creating three dimensional renderings. "The technology has taken the place of the T-square and the protractor. My clients can check the website for information on how a project is going.

"I have a growing client base. This is a small area, but I'm getting my name out there."

Sherrod and his wife Carol have four children, Chloe, 11 years old, Tobias, 11 years old, Ben, nine years old and Lily, five years old.
