Trip is fun but glad to be home in Alabama Have you ever seen something that was so beautiful that words just could not describe the feeling that came over you? Well that was how I felt when I saw the Port of Mobile come into view last Thursday morning. I knew that I was fixin' to be back on solid ground. And that solid ground was not going to be Mexico, but Sweet Home Alabama. It is not that I did not enjoy the cruise I took, because I had a very good time. It is always good to get away from the daily grind and get the batteries recharged. But after five days of rolling along in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, with two port calls in Costa Maya and Cozumel, I was ready to get home. One thing is for certain. When you are on a boat for that many days you can pick out folks and some of them stick with you for a long time. At the last formal meal there was a gentleman from the Moundville area who was having a good time with life who may have made the funniest statement that I heard. As the meal was winding down the waiter came through showing Baked Alaskan, but everyone had already had this rich chocolate dish served with ice cream. It may be the richest dessert I have ever eaten and it was very good. Anyway, this man thought he was going to get rooked out of his favorite sweet. All of a sudden he announces loud enough to be heard over a college football game... "Hey Hopsing..get me some of that there Mudslide Pie...Chop! Chop!" Throw political correctness out the window of the ship. Speaking of the paradise that is the Mexican beach resorts of Costa Maya and Cozumel...they look so good from the boat. But when you set foot on those enchanted islands, the story changes slightly, if you have any sense of smell whatsoever. I actually met the Latin- American Ricky Bobby while in Costa Maya. Because when I hailed a taxi, the man was speed shifting, jumping curbs and drafting behind a tour bus. The whole time he was on his walkietalkie. For all I know he was telling the pit crew they needed to tighten a wedge because the back-end was too loose or something. I have no idea except I paid $2 for the experience. I think everyone should take full advantage of the port in Mobile and take a cruise. Even if it is one of those "cruises to nowhere" that just gets you out into international waters. From what I understand, the Holiday in Mobile is the smallest and oldest boat in the Carnival fleet, but it is tops in revenue generated. The cruise director said he thought the success was based on the southern hospitality that we have when we get around other folks and that it must have rubbed off on the crew. I know of at least one that made an impression. Nikolay from Serbia was forevermore Johnny-on-the-spot. The man made sure no one was lacking for anything. He was on a first name basis with just about everyone after the first day. He was such a good sport he even helped out with a scavenger hunt-type game with some of the folks from this area who went on a cruise the week we came back. You'll just have to ask around to find out about that one. But trust me it is a funny story when you hear it. Anyway the man makes $75 a month but works like he makes $750 a day. It is a great work ethic, one that many in these parts would do good to try and be like. But still, back here in this world football practice has begun as has volleyball practice. It is the time of the year we in the South all love.....and it is good to see it.
That's all folks......
